Stand Up Paddle Learning Steps
- Equipment discovery: learn how to carry the board, adjust the paddle, and attach your leash.
- Paddling on your knees: if you have never practiced SUP, start on your knees. Get used to the board’s instability before standing up. Progress at your own pace.
- Finding balance while standing: start on calm water, preferably without waves or wind. Once comfortable, stand up with knees slightly bent and feet side by side at the widest point of the board.
- Learning to paddle: discover how to hold the paddle and paddle efficiently. The paddle provides balance by allowing you to lean on the water. Once you gain a bit of speed, balance comes naturally.
- Learning how to turn: discover different turning techniques (basic turn, reverse stroke, surf turn).
- SUP surfing: take advantage of waves to learn how to surf with a Stand Up Paddle. Learn how to generate speed, stand up, and follow the wave.
Safety First!
- Inform someone close to you that you are going on the water and in which direction you plan to go.
- Always wear a buoyancy vest.
- Attach the leash to your ankle or below the knee.
- For safety reasons, stay within 300 meters from the shore, especially with an inflatable SUP.
- If going on a tour, paddle upwind first. On the way back, when you are more tired, the wind will help you return.
- Take a mobile phone in a waterproof case.
- Bring a bottle of water and a cereal bar.
- For longer tours, wear sunglasses and a cap.

Questions.
Do I need to bring my own equipment to practice Stand Up Paddle at Monki ?
All the equipment required for Stand Up Paddle lessons is provided by Monki School.
However, please remember to bring :
- Swimsuit
- Towel
- Sunscreen
- Cap or hat
- Sunglasses
- Waterproof watch or phone in a waterproof pouch
What is the difference between taking a Stand Up Paddle lesson and renting a board ?
During a Stand Up Paddle lesson, an instructor guides you and gives advice throughout the session.
With SUP rental, you practice completely independently, without supervision.
What level is required to rent a Stand Up Paddle board at Monki ?
No prior experience is required to rent a Stand Up Paddle board.
If you are a beginner, simply inform the team. The instructors will give you some safety advice before departure.
Important recommendations :
- Do not go too far from the center
- Start your outing against the current and the wind
- Stay within the 300 m coastal zone
- Wear your buoyancy vest
- Bring a waterproof watch
- Use a waterproof pouch for your phone (a plastic bag is not sufficient)
How does a Stand Up Paddle lesson take place at Monki ?
The meeting time is confirmed the evening before. Lessons generally take place in the morning, to enjoy calm water conditions.
It is recommended to protect yourself well from the sun : long-sleeve t-shirt or lycra, boardshorts, cap or hat.
If you get cold easily, a shorty (summer wetsuit) may be useful (not provided by the center).
After a land briefing, you head out onto the water. The instructor adapts the advice to your level.
Beginners usually start on their knees, then gradually stand up.
You then learn how to handle the paddle, glide in a straight line, turn, and enjoy a safe paddle around the area.
What are the benefits of practicing Stand Up Paddle ?
SUP is a very complete activity.
The balance work strongly engages the core and abdominal muscles, while paddling strengthens the upper body.
By standing upright, looking ahead and keeping your head up, you also activate the back muscles.
Finally, practicing an outdoor sport on the water, gliding peacefully on a board, is above all a moment of pleasure and relaxation.
